TRAINING OF THE DIOCESAN TEAM FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF WOMEN’S PROJECTS

Theme: SELF-HELP – KEY TO WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT

Goal: To initiate a process of monitoring, co-ordination and strengthening of self-help groups especially in the area of income generating projects.

Objectives: To set in place a team that:
- Has clear criteria with regard to the functioning of the self-help groups.
- Can initiate and organise the existing self-help groups in the diocese.
- Can support and monitor their performance
- Can offer resource materials on various awareness issues suited to the locality.
- Can facilitate networking and cluster formation among various groups.

To empower the team to be able to:
- Offer guidance with regard to income generating projects
-Identify projects that are viable in the locality
- Help in sustaining the IGP projects that are initiated
- Organise skill-training programmes according to the needs of the locality
- Create a network that can support production and marketing.

Type of participants:
- Women Co-ordinator
- 2 people ( who have the diocesan perspective and are very familiar with the organization of self-help groups and income generating projects in the diocese)

Programme envisaged:
A three day programme for all the 13 + 1 dioceses of the Western Region as a first step towards initiating the process.

Date: 5, 6, 7 December, 2002
Venue : Vinayalaya, Andheri (E), Mumbai


Content:
- Streamlining of detailed guidelines for SHGs
- Initial awareness programme/ motivation
- Criteria for membership
- Guidelines for the functioning of a SHG
- Rules and Regulations
- Types of books to be maintained
- General modality of meetings
- Topics/ issues to be tackled
- Stages of growth in a SHG
- Pointers for Evaluation at every stage

- Identifying criteria for choosing of Income Generating Projects (Urban – Rural, Farm – non Farm based etc.)
- Planning for the Celebration of International Women’s Day at the
Diocesan Level.)
- Launching of issue-based campaigns focusing on one issue per year
(e.g. early marriage, health of girl child, menstrual taboos, breast-
feeding, etc.)

Follow-up Meetings: at the Zonal level focusing specifically on skill training programmes. The diocesan teams will identify and suggest with regard to the types of skills for which WRSSF will organise skill training programmes at the zonal levels.

Follow-up Responsibility of the Team:
The team will go back and make a study of the situation in the diocese with regard to the SHGs and will identify self-help groups that are viable for income generating projects. The groups thus identified will be guided and supported by the DSSS in beginning income-generating projects.

WRSSF will organise skill training programmes for such groups at Zonal levels.

Please note that this programme is not an input seminar, but the initiation of a process. The team will assist the DSSS in monitoring, guiding and supporting the SHGs. Therefore, please give sufficient thought before you select a person to represent your diocese. The person should be able to take up the follow-up responsibility.
